The number of crimes committed with the use of information and telecommunication technologies last year increased by 73.4%, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation - Head of the Investigative Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Major General of Justice Sergei Lebedev said in an interview with Izvestia.
“The increase in the number of cybercrimes was not least influenced by the consequences of the spread of COVID-19. In particular, the transition to the Internet space of many areas of public relations (including online transactions) due to self-isolation and remote work. This year, to one degree or another, this trend will continue, ”he said.
Among the total number of cybercrimes, almost half are fraud (46.4%), a third is theft (34%), almost every tenth is the sale of narcotic drugs (9.2%). Last year, 5,978 (1.2%) facts of the sale of counterfeit money or securities using information and telecommunication technologies (ITT) were also registered.

“We have already worked out ways to counter this evil. The capabilities of software systems are actively used, which allow collecting and analyzing information about illegal actions, ”explained Sergei Lebedev.
The department is engaged in professional training of investigators to work with this category of crimes.
